Viagra, Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug, launched by its maker on Wednesday at the US pharmacy chain CVS Health, the New York-based firm said. It will be offered at a discounted price by CVS Pharmacy, the company said, citing Pfizer’s request. CVS said the price had fallen to $50 for a 30-tablet bottle.
Viagra, which is made by Pfizer, has been a top seller among American men’s health care providers since its introduction in 1998. Over the next five years, it will be a top seller for health care providers and consumers alike, with sales of $1.4 billion.
A study by the pharmaceutical industry’s National Health Service (NHS) estimated that more than 6.3 million prescriptions were written for Viagra in 2010, up from just over 2.1 million in 1998. About 9.1 million prescriptions were written in the US in 2010, up from 9.4 million in 1998.
Viagra’s maker, CVS Health, had planned to sell the drug at a lower price, it said. However, Pfizer, which makes Viagra, had earlier told the FDA that it did not want the lower price. The company declined to comment.
CVS said it was in discussions with health care professionals about selling Viagra. The company has not commented on the pricing details, but said it planned to sell the drug at a discount to CVS for $50, or $30 for a 20-tablet bottle, or $30 for a 30-tablet bottle.
The New York-based firm said it was reviewing its pricing for the lower price of Viagra. The company said it was considering selling the drug at a more discounted price. It was the last of a number of major branded Viagra generics. Pfizer has been looking for more than a decade for a new competitor to its erectile dysfunction drug.
Pfizer, along with Sanofi-Aventis and Bayer AG, has also been looking for a competitor to its Viagra. Sanofi, the world’s biggest pharmaceutical company, is seeking to sell a rival in 2003. CVS is planning a sale of its Viagra division.
New Viagra sales are up more than 20 per cent year to date, but Viagra is still the largest prescription drug marketer in the US.
CVS, based in the US, posted the lowest total sales of Viagra in a year, with a sales of $13.65 billion, or 16.2 per cent of its revenue.
Pfizer, which has a marketing department in the company’s headquarters in the UK, has been trying to sell Viagra to consumers since 1998. Pfizer said it was interested in selling its Viagra to consumers.
Pfizer said it expected sales in the US of about $1 billion by 2010. The company expects sales in the US of about $600 million by 2012.
Last month, Pfizer said its Viagra was approved for sale in the United States and was expected to be sold in the US by 2012.
